Christmas. Food, presents, family and endless amounts of tinsel. For some the tinsel alone is enough to ruin the holidays but for others far more serious issues make Christmas a very unpleasant time of the year. At Coventry Citizen’s Advice Bureau, we want nothing more than for you to have a very merry Christmas and we are here to help you resolve any issues you might have in time for 25th December.
We’ve prepared a short guide to the issues that tend rear their ugly heads at Christmas and to show Coventry CAB can help.
Debt can be a big problem at this time of year. It’s not surprising really with the excessive amount of buying of presents, food and drink. The problem is all that spending doesn’t help the heath of your bank balance and can often tip you into or further into debt. It doesn’t have to be that way. There are ways of keeping the spending down with a few budgeting and money saving idea’s that won’t mean compromising on having a lovely Christmas time. Have a look here (near the bottom of the page) for tips on how to save money at Christmas.
Please do not put yourself in a situation this Christmas where you end up in severe and sometimes dangerous debt. Set yourself a budget and stick to it. Don’t rely on your overdraft to get you though. An overdraft isn’t your money and you still have to pay it back. Research where you’re buying things from; are they reputable, do they have a good success rating and what are their reviews like? Don’t sign up to credit agreements that you know you will struggle to keep up with. Look for another alternative. Most importantly, if you notice things are starting to get away from you, stop. Stop spending and take a step back to look at the situation. You mustn’t forget that you might have other bills to pay. You need a roof over your head more than someone needs a present.
Don’t let debt bring you down. At Coventry CAB we have a specialist team of debt advisers who can help you work through your debt problems and hopefully ease the situation.
Often one of the most important pieces of advice we can give to people is, if there is enough money, to always pay your mortgage repayments and rent. This will limit any likelihood of your home being taken from you. Everyone deserves to be warm and safe at Christmas. If you are worried that there is a risk to your home being taken from you, please come into the CAB and we can work something out. We can speak to the appropriate people and try to come to an agreement with them. If something has already happened, we can help there too.
Coventry CAB can also advise on benefits and point you in the right directions for most other issues.
We want to help you this Christmas and will be ready and waiting in the New Year should you need us.
Pop in and see us at Kirby House, Little Park Street, Coventry (opposite the Magistrates Court). We are open from 9:30am to 4pm during the week, but if you would like an appointment we do recommend coming before 9:00am as a queue does form.
Have a very Merry Christmas.
